-Why Demons Are Appealing to Writers-
Demons appear throughout history and in many different cultures and religions. They take many forms, some truly evil, others, like in Greek mythology, are actually spirits of divine inspiration. From Mesopotamian storm demons to Jinn, to more modern ideas of evil spirits manipulating humans, there are endless stories to tell.
To me, demons are a way to make sense out of the scary and dark things that happen in this world. For Pretty Dark Nothing, the demons are built on the idea that they feed on the darkness living inside humans and exploit that, they magnify the insecurities and self-doubt that live inside all of us and then use that pain and suffering to gain power and create chaos. In a way, the demons are a metaphor for depression and the helplessness that comes along with that.
We all have inner demons we battle, those voices that tell us we’re not good enough, taunt us, paralyze us with fear. That’s when the idea for a novel started to form. I asked myself what would happen if those negative voices, inner demons weren’t imagined. What would happen if they were real and they started to manifest outside the dream world? What if they influenced things around us and what if you were the only one that could see them? That’s when Quinn and the idea for Pretty Dark Nothing was born. The story grew from there.
The fight between good and evil is a universal theme that all human kind can relate to and has always fascinated me. Weather the demons are fallen angels, minions of Satan, or metaphors for the darkness that lives inside all of us, the personification of evil still captivates the imagination.
